SEEKING COMFORT, FINDING JOY
Dear Friends,
Sending out a big dose of love and peace to all of you. It’s been quite a month, hasn’t it? I’m still working through the surprising results of the election. I’d love to say I jumped into action on November 6, but like many I’ve spoken with, I’ve taken a breather from the news, social media, and even some of my usual duties. Instead, I’ve been diving into some incredible distractions that I’m excited to share with you.
First, I’ve subscribed to Ella Emhoff’s delightful Substack, Soft Crafts. As Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff’s daughter, she’s been wrestling with election results while exploring her creativity as a form of healing. It’s been inspiring to follow along. Also, artist Wendy MacNaughton's substack Draw Together is a salve. Her essay "The Role of an Artist" speaks to the times and our call to action as creatives and deep feeling human beings.
I’ve also been reading non-stop. Below, you’ll find a list of my favorite books of the year, but I also recommend Paula Hawkins’ newest thriller, The Blue Hour. It’s a gripping read. I’m juggling a few other titles too: Beautyland, Martyr!, Demon Copperhead, and The Blue Sisters. Each first chapter hooked me immediately, so it’s a tough call on what to finish first.
Mark and I have indulged in some fantastic films (and tubs of popcorn and bags of chocolate covered raisins) lately. Small Things Like These, starring the amazing Cillian Murphy and based on Claire Keegan’s novel, is quietly resonant. A Real Pain with Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg—about cousins on a Holocaust tour funded by their late grandmother—was touchingly funny and deeply moving. And, of course, Wicked whisked us away from reality for nearly three hours of pure magic. It exceeded every expectation.
I’ve also switched up my podcast lineup, leaving behind the news and politics for the time being. Instead, I’ve embraced The Book Riot, Pop Culture Happy Hour, and NPR's Book of the Day. They’ve been a much-needed palate cleanser.
As the holidays approach, my hope is that we all find our people—friends who share our worldview, family who (hopefully!) steer clear of politics at the dinner table—and the unconditional love of a small animal. (Our rescue cat Tippi Hedren has been an emotional lifesaver.) Let’s persevere, make a difference in our own corners of the world, and try to keep the sugar and eggnog consumption in check.
Finally, below you’ll find my extended Holiday Gift Guide. It’s packed with a little something sweet and fun for everyone. I hope you enjoy exploring it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Warm holiday wishes,Jenie

READ
James is the first book in ages that left me wanting to start it all over again the moment I finished. It bewitched, entertained, enlightened, and haunted me; everything a great book should do. Loosely based on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Everett's novel begins playfully, following familiar beats, but as Jim ventures out alone, it deepens into a powerful exploration of racism, violence, and survival. Truly unforgettable. This may be one of my all-time favorites.
Amor Towles has a way of crafting stories that pull me in completely, and Rules of Civility was no exception. His dazzling first novel follows Katey Kontent, a sharp and ambitious twenty-five-year-old, whose life takes a transformative turn after a chance encounter with a charming banker on New Year’s Eve 1937. Towles paints a vibrant picture of New York’s high society, filled with wit, elegance, and richly drawn characters. It’s sophisticated, entertaining, and utterly unforgettable.
A subject I love! By Any Other Name is a clever, beautifully researched novel that intertwines the stories of modern playwright Melina Green and her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. Packed with Shakespearean Easter eggs and brimming with ambition, courage, and wit, it’s a captivating tribute to women’s voices fighting to be heard.
Phoebe is a phenomenal protagonist, and The Wedding People is a perfect blend of heartbreak and humor. I LOL'd so many times and loved seeing so many characters transform. This wise, propulsive novel is a tender and absurdly funny look at how unexpected encounters can help us start anew. I’ll truly miss spending time with Phoebe and the wedding people. This book is a gem.
WATCH
Mark and I can’t resist a great international spy thriller, and The Day of the Jackal is right up our alley. Eddie Redmayne stars as the Jackal, a ruthless assassin-for-hire in this Peacock remake of the ’70s classic. After his latest kill, he’s hunted by a determined British intelligence officer, played by Lashana Lynch, in a gripping cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. Packed with tension and destruction, it’s a must-watch for thriller fans! P.S. the soundtrack is "killer."
The Franchise hilariously peeks behind the curtain of superhero moviemaking, following the crew of an unloved franchise movie as they scramble to survive in a chaotic cinematic universe. With Hamish Patel, Richard E. Grant, and Billy Magnussen bringing the humor, the series asks the big question: how does the cinematic sausage really get made? Executive producer Sam Mendes ensures this comedy delivers sharp wit and plenty of behind-the-scenes chaos.
I was hooked on Bad Sisters from the first episode. This darkly hilarious Apple TV+ series doesn’t shy away from its sinister heart—you know from the start that John Paul (played brilliantly by Claes Bang) ends up dead, making his sisters-in-law’s murder plot oddly satisfying. Season 2 raises the stakes with new secrets and renowned Royal Shakespeare Company actress Fiona Shaw’s chilling addition. Her performance adds depth to this fearless, merciless, and wickedly good show.
Somebody Somewhere is one of the most honest and heartfelt shows I’ve ever watched. Bridget Everett shines as Sam, navigating grief, family, and small-town life in Manhattan, Kansas. Season 3 is just as funny, tender, and deeply relatable as ever. With a stellar cast, including the hilarious Jeff Hiller and the fantastic Mary Catherine Garrison, the series captures the beauty and messiness of love, friendship, and self-discovery. It’s like coming home: unexpected, messy, and full of grace.
